#42 The Unconventional Way to Pursue Your Passion w/ Giulia Mulè
I’ve been away from Bali for 3 months. And in that time my partner and I visited each other’s hometowns, met each other’s family and friends and traveled to 6 different countries.
Whenever I met new people on this trip, they looked at me sideways and questioned why I’d want to visit below freezing temperatures when I could be tanning in a tropical paradise.
My original response was that it was mainly to celebrate the holidays with our families, especially because we didn’t get the chance last year. But what I noticed as the weeks went by was how much change I had been craving from my normal routine and environment, even if it was in paradise.
As beautiful as Bali is, I have gotten used to it. It’s always 80 degrees, all year round. Christmas doesn’t feel like “Christmas” without all the lights, cold weather and decorations you see in the windows of homes and shopping malls.
Everything is constant in the tropics. And I don’t really notice how much time passes by when it’s always sunny and warm.
This holiday season, I wanted to feel change. To see it reflected in the seasons, the weather, and the familiar progression of the year.
And that’s exactly what I got.
I finally got to visit the Eiffel tower, eat foie gras and escargot and see the Palace of Versailles in France.
I experienced a white Christmas in Germany, visited old castles and skied in the Alps.
I enjoyed tapas, and wine at almost every meal, explored cities by foot and playfully shopped for houses in Spain.
As our trip comes to an end, I’m noticing that I’m returning home with a new perspective. And I’m reminded that the place I call home now was once strange, new and unfamiliar - and far from routine.
It invites the idea that home isn’t always constant. It can evolve and change, and can be whatever and wherever you make of it.
In my interview with Giulia Mulè, she shares her experiences in making a home in multiple new environments. After growing up in Rome, she moved to London for 12 years where she met her husband and became a full time travel and food blogger. She spent some time living alone in Bali (where we met!), and recently relocated to Wroclaw, Poland, where she is starting over again.
We talk about what it took for her to create a home in each city she moved to and how she was able to find community and belonging.
She also shares her full-circle journey of leaving her 9-5 job, to having the ultimate freedom from being an Instagram influencer, to joining the workforce again while still being able to share her passions with the world.
I look forward to what life will be like in Bali after a few months away. I’m excited to integrate my experiences and new perspectives into my daily routine.
Will keep you posted of course.
P.S. Are you craving change too? Something different in your life, career or relationships?
